It’s your Big Day, so how do you make it YOUR Big Day and not just another wedding. Let your guests see your touches and personality throughout the day in the ceremony, the reception and the party afterwards. So how do you do this?
Personalise the ceremony with your flower choices, music selection and readings. Build a rapport with the celebrant, it can make a big difference in how they conduct the ceremony.
Ask family and friends to be involved, they know you best and will speak from the heart, but be careful to pick clear speaking readers, not everyone is comfortable with public speaking and they may be on video afterwards.
Choose music throughout the day to suit you and the age profile of your party – your wedding ceremony, garden party and evening entertainment are all areas where music can add that touch of magic. Create that party atmosphere, so although you may appreciate alternative music, will your guests dance to it?
Capture treasured memories professionally. You don’t want to discover the camera was out of focus later!
Do you want to record your day on video? Will you and everyone else be comfortable with it?
Make it fun not formal. This is a celebration of your love, a happy time for everyone and it should feel that way. Guests stuffed into uncomfortable suits and having to watch their Ps and Qs will remember your wedding for the wrong reasons.
Wedding Reception Planning
Personalise your Table Plan. Nobody likes to be seated at Table 27, and you don’t want to inadvertently offend, so why not name the tables instead of numbering them. You can use Colours, Herbs, Cities, Wines, etc. Be creative.
You can add personal trimmings to your reception: wedding favours, little gifts, ice-creams, etc., but know in advance what’s allowed in the venue or any conditions that may apply. Don’t risk breaking the rules and it’s stopped on the wedding day. If you’ve spent a lot of money on lanterns or fireworks, and they’re not allowed, it will be a big disappointment, not to mention a waste of time and money.
Why not bring a selection of flip flops for those tired feet in the evening? They can be picked up very cheaply. Include a few large sizes for the guys, they may not admit it, but they’ll be grateful too! If you think it might be a little cool in the evening, then a selection of shawls or pashminas will be very welcome.
Check the weather nearer the day and make any adjustments necessary. Perhaps you’ll need to bring some umbrellas or even wellies for the bridal party. It’s worth checking - you don’t want to get snowed in.
A little forward planning always goes a long way. Don’t feel the need to conform with other people’s ideas on what YOUR wedding day should be. Little touches here and there will allow your personality to shine through and you don’t need to break the bank to do it. Have fun, after all it is a celebration.
